Alice O. Wilkins Scholarship
Port Lavaca, Texas
A scholarship will be awarded each year in the memory of Alice O. Wilkins, “The Mother of Education”, of the all black school in Port Lavaca, Texas. The scholarship will be presented to a high school graduating senior whose parent or family originated from Port Lavaca and resides anywhere, in the United States of America.
The recipient must be a graduating high school senior and plan to attend an accredited college or vocational school, or a college student continuing his/her education. Note: A high school student will have priority.
Scholarship
The Alice O. Wilkins Scholarship will be presented annually to a new recipient in the amount of $500 (five hundred dollars). The recipient is required to provide Wilkins Alumni Inc. a copy of his/her transcript at the end of their first semester. The scholarship will be paid directly to the college or vocational school, at the beginning of the fall semester, pending written proof of registration from said learning institute.
If the Alice O. Wilkins Scholarship recipient provides a satisfactory progress (to the committee), during his/her first semester, the applicant could qualify to receive a future Wilkins Scholarship (For up to 2 years). Note: To be considered, the applicant will be required to submit a new standard application.
Application
The Application and all required documents must be submitted no later than April 15th of the scholarship year. The Wilkins Scholarship Committee will meet no later than May 1st (of the scholarship year), to determine the recipient of the scholarship. The awarded recipient will be announced and contacted on or before June 30th . The Scholarship payment will be submitted to the Recipient’s desired institution on or before September 15th, of the school year.
Every Scholarship year, a committee member will take a photo presenting the Scholarship to the Recipient. The photo will then be submitted to the Port Lavaca Wave, to be included in the next issue of the newspaper. If (due to geographics), a member of the Scholarship Committee is unable to present the scholarship to the recipient, we will post the recipient’s name to the website's scholarship recipients list.
Requirements
Applicant must submit:
• A written letter of intent, advising the committee of what field he/she desires to further their education in, and how the Alice O. Wilkins Scholarship could assist him/her in that desire.
• A 3x5 color photo of applicant (submit via email or upload to online application)
* A copy of his/her High School Transcript, that reflects his/her Grade Point Average of 2.0 or higher
* 2 Letters of References from a Teacher at his/her existing High School/College
* A copy of proof of acceptance to his/her desired college or vocational school
* A Letter of Consent from the Student, Parent or Guardian of the recipient to publish recipient’s name, photo and the name of the attending school (in newspaper and on website)
All the above requirements must be submitted at the same time, with the Application (via email or online).
